CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston trimmed a 20-point deficit in the third quarter to single digits with seven minutes remaining before dropping a 70-56 decision to James Madison on Saturday at TD Arena.
The teams will conclude their two-game weekend set tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Tyler Collins was the lone Cougar (5-4, 1-2 CAA) in double figures with 17 points while
Anika McGarity and
Chelsea Wooten scored nine and eight, respectively.
Arynn Eady continued her strong defensive work with a team-high eight rebounds to go along with four blocks, and
Zoe McCrary rejected three shots.
Three Dukes registered double-doubles, led by Jaylin Carodine with 13 points and 12 rebounds, to help JMU (8-5, 4-2) own a 55-39 advantage on the glass. Anne Francoise Diouf also had 12 boards, and Kiki Jefferson grabbed 11.
CofC trailed only 40-35 after a 3-pointer by Wooten with 6:52 left in the third quarter before the Dukes went on a 16-1 run to build their margin to 56-36. The Cougars hung tough, scoring seven of the final eight points of the period, with a basket and free throw by McCrary making it 57-43.
The rally continued in the fourth stanza, culminated by a jumper by Collins that pulled the Cougars within 59-50 with 6:56 to go. JMU scored the next five points, however, and CofC was unable to get closer than 10 the rest of the way.
