Cougars Come Up Short in 86-76 Loss to North Florida

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women's basketball team (3-2, 0-0) suffered its second straight loss on Saturday, falling 86-76 to North Florida. The Cougars led by one after the first and trailed by six at halftime. The Ospreys would gain some separation in the third quarter before the Cougars came storming back in the fourth. The comeback bid was not in the cards, however, as the Ospreys escaped TD Arena with an 86-76 victory.

First Half

  • Anika McGarity made her first start of the season and provided an immediate contribution. The sophomore drained two threes in the first five minutes of the first quarter
  • Tyler Collins added five points of her own in the first quarter
  • After a back-and-forth quarter that included six lead changes, the Cougars owned a 17-16 lead after the first
  • UNF scored the first five points of the second quarter to gain a four-point advantage
  • The Cougars would tie it up at 21-21 with 7:37 to play, but a 12-5 run by North Florida gave the Ospreys a 33-26 lead with 3:18 to go in the first half
  • The two teams went back-and-forth over the final two minutes of the half, and North Florida entered the half with a 42-36 lead
  • UNF outscored the Cougars 26-19 in the second period

Second Half

  • The Ospreys opened the second half on an 8-2 run that gave North Florida a 50-38 lead with 6:52 to go in the third quarter
  • With the Cougars trailing 42-38, North Florida would embark on a 22-5 run that gave the visitors a commanding 21 point lead with 2:46 left in the third period
  • CofC would end the third on a 7-0 spurt, but UNF still led 64-50 entering the fourth quarter 
  • North Florida would respond, scoring the first five points of the fourth and stretching its lead out to 19
  • A 10-2 run by CofC - fueled by seven consecutive points from Jenna Annecchiarico - cut the UNF lead to 73-64 with 5:05 remaining
  • The Cougars would cut the defecit to as much as six points in the final frame, but North Florida kept getting buckets when it needed them

Team Stats

  • The Ospreys won the game in the paint, scoring 44 of their points in the paint and winning the rebounding battle 46-34
  • CofC shot just 39 percent from the field while UNF shot 52 percent
  • North Florida outscored Charleston 48-33 in the second and third quarters

Key Cougars

  • Anika McGarity was inserted into the starting lineup on Saturday. The sophomore scored 18 points on six triples in her first start of the season
  • Jenna Annecchiarico was her usual self, dropping 25 points to go along with seven assists
  • Peyton Martin added a double-double, dropping 11 points and 13 rebounds

  • The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 30 as Charleston rounds out a three-game homestead with a matchup against Georgia Southern. The game will tipoff at 5:00 p.m. inside TD Arena.
