CHARLESTON, S.C. – Former College of Charleston men's soccer stars Leland Archer ('18) and Nico Rittmeyer ('20) both recently earned their first caps for their respective countries' national teams.
Archer, who is originally from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, started for his country against the U.S. Men's National Team in an international friendly held on Jan. 31 in Orlando, Fla.
The 25-year-old defender played for the Cougars from 2014 to 2017, where he made 68 appearances and scored 11 career goals. His previous Trinidad and Tobago National Team experience included being a member of the U-17 squad in 2012 and 2013 and U-20 squad in 2015.
Rittmeyer, who grew up in Savannah, Ga., but is an American-born Guatemalan, played at The College from 2014 until he signed a professional contract in 2017. He tallied 13 career goals in 51 appearances for the Cougars.
The 27-year-old midfielder made his pro debut against Atlanta United FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2017. This past fall, Rittmeyer received his first call-up to the Guatemala Senior National Team. He started in Guatemala's 1-0 shutout of Puerto Rico in an international friendly held on Jan. 23 in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
"I am so excited for Leland and Nico's first caps," CofC Head Coach Keith Wiggans said. "These guys are great professionals. They have worked incredibly hard to improve their game and I couldn't be happier to see them getting the recognition. I am confident this will be their first of many caps for their respective nations."
Both are currently playing professional soccer for the USL Championship club Charleston Battery.
