WILMINGTON, N.C. – Madison Taylor came off the bench to score a season-high 18 points to lead four College of Charleston players in double figures in a 61-54 loss at UNCW on Sunday.
Â
Taylor connected on six field goals, including four from long distance, and came within two of her career high set against Hofstra last season. She was joined in double figures by
Chelsea Wooten with 11 and
Amira Williams and
Arynn Eady with 10 each.
Williams also led the Cougars (6-8, 2-6 CAA) with seven rebounds and had four of the team's 15 steals. The CofC defense forced a total of 29 turnovers and limited the Seahawks (5-12, 2-9) to 34 percent from the field.
In a nip-and-tuck affair, the Cougars led 28-27 at halftime and the final score was the largest margin for either team. An Eady rebound and put back had CofC within 55-53 with 27 seconds left, but UNCW hit six of eight from the line the rest of the way to seal the victory.
Taylor connected on a 3-pointer to tie the game at 45 with 7:35 remaining, and two free throws by Wooten gave the visitors a two-point lead at the 5:52 mark.
But the Seahawks responded by scoring the next five points to take a lead they never relinquished.
The Cougars wrap up the regular season on Friday at Elon before heading back to Elon for the CAA Tournament beginning March 10.
