MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Areyanna Scott set a school record in the javelin, and Haley Dempsey and Samantha Holbrook also starred in throwing events to lead College of Charleston on the first day of the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge.

In only her second career meet, the freshman Scott turned in a mark of 42.94m (140 feet, 10 inches) to eclipse the previous school record held by Christine Klinar since 2013 by 3 feet, 7 inches. Scott also had a PR in the hammer and reached the finals with a throw of 34.59m (113-6) to finish in ninth place.

Dempsey had a pair of PRs on Friday, including a toss of 38.13m (125-1) in the javelin to finish second and move into fifth in the Cougar record book. She also had a throw of 33.36m (110-5) in the hammer.

Holbrook qualified for the finals in the hammer and finished fifth overall with a mark of 40.21m (131-11). Last week, Holbrook debuted for the Cougars by entering the record book in ninth place in the event.

Luzy Lieger won the pole vault and is now tied for fourth in school history, clearing the bar at 3.45m (11-3 ¾). Lieger, the CofC record holder in the indoor pole vault, was competing in her first outdoor meet after last season was canceled.

The Cougars took the top four spots in the 5000 meters, led by Tess Masselink in 18:04.80. Kristen Cherry had a PR (18:21.35) and was followed by Rhian Purves (18:39.89) and Morgan Summey (19:13.61).
