CHARLESTON, S.C. – Shealyn Starks and Payton Wade homered to back the complete game pitching of Katie Freeman to lead College of Charleston to a 6-2 win over Charleston Southern in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader at the CSU Softball Field.
The Buccaneers bounced back for a 6-4 win in the nightcap.
In the opener, Starks broke a 1-1 tie in the third with her first career home run, and Wade added a three-run shot in sixth, her first of two round trippers on the day, to made it a 5-1 contest.
Starks had a season-high three hits and drove in the Cougars' final run with an RBI single in the seventh. Freeman picked up her second career win, allowing five hits without walking a batter, and retired 11 in a row from the second until a two-out error in the fifth.
In the second inning of game two, Wade blasted a two-run homer followed by a Noel Dominguez double and RBI single by Jenna Carter to take a 3-1 lead, but CSU responded with four in its half of the frame for a 5-3 advantage.
The Cougars loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth but could manage only one run on a sacrifice fly by Riley Miller. Trailing 6-4 in the seventh, CofC got runners to second and third before a line drive by Starks carried right to the Buccaneer center fielder to end the game.
Carli McCants worked 4 2/3 innings in relief and allowed only one earned run while striking out four.
The Cougars resume Colonial Athletic Association play with three games at James Madison, including a doubleheader Saturday and a Sunday single contest.
