MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Junior defender Chatham Headrick (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored the game-winning header as the College of Charleston men's soccer team upset No. 16-ranked Coastal Carolina in overtime on Senior Night at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.
It marked the first career win for Head Coach Keith Wiggans, the long-time assistant and 2004 College of Charleston alum, who took over the reins for retired Head Coach Ralph Lundy in December of 2019.
"I couldn't be more happy," Wiggans said. "Our guys showed a lot of character. It's been a tough season. But, to get our last result tonight like this on Senior Night, our guys were fantastic."
Headrick was in front of the net after the serve in the box from senior midfielder Jake Nicholson (Sheffield, England) off the team's fifth corner kick of the game in the 97th minute. It was his first career goal in 18 games played for the Cougars.
"We showed we could find the back of the net," Wiggans said. "It couldn't be more fitting with the set piece we've been working on. Jake made a great serve and Chatham did the rest."
The Cougars (1-4-3) previously held No. 12-ranked and Colonial Athletic Association rival UNCW to a 0-0 draw on March 20. It was the program's first win over a Top 25 opponent since a 2-1 road victory at No. 15 UNCW on Oct. 11, 2017 in Wilmington, N.C.
The Chanticleers (9-3-2) outshot the Cougars, 21-9, with seven attempts on frame that were all saved by junior goalkeeper Cameron Smith (Lexington, S.C.). It was one shy of his career high of eight saves at Elon on April 4 and his second career shutout.
It was also the last career game for senior defender Tomas Cox (Charleston, S.C.), who made his fifth career start and logged in 42 minutes of action versus Coastal.
"This is a great group," Wiggans said. "We had some tough times this spring, but in the end, we are going to come out better for it. We know what it takes now to get a hard win. Hopefully, they will put the work in during the summer to come back strong in August."
