Cougars Fall to Phoenix on Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team fell to the Elon Phoenix, 3-1, in the second match of the weekend series between the two Colonial Athletic Association foes on Saturday afternoon in TD Arena.
 
In a similar script to Friday's matchup, Elon (7-5, 2-0 CAA) bounced back from a 25-18 setback in the opening set to win the next three sets and complete the comeback. The Phoenix held College of Charleston (7-6, 0-2 CAA) to 41 kills, eight blocks and a .128 hitting percentage. Elon finished the afternoon with 46 kills, nine blocks and eight aces while hitting .204 as a team.
 
Critical Point
With Charleston leading one set to none, Elon opened the second frame with a 9-2 run and maintained a lead of at least six points for much of the set to even the match at 1-1. Elon won the third set, 25-19, and closed out the victory with a 25-16 decision in the fourth frame.
 
Key Cougars
  • Sophomore Sammy Campion collected a match- and career-high 26 digs – including 12 in the first set – to go along with three service aces.
  • Gabi Bailey and Lexi Wierzbicki each accounted for 12 digs while Bailey added 10 digs to finish with a double-double.
  • Wierzbicki equaled her career-best with four blocks in the contest.
  • Freshman Emma Appleman recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs.
Game Notes
  • The Phoenix sweep the season series with Charleston for the first time in the all-time series.
  • Charleston held Elon to seven kills with seven errors in its 25-18 first-set win.
  • Elon's Leah Daniel led all hitters with 19 kills including seven in set two.

The Cougars will return to the court next Saturday, September 25 in the first of two matches against James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. First serve is slated for 1:00 p.m.
