ROCK HILL, S.C. – College of Charleston and Winthrop played an even contest on Tuesday in Rock Hill with the Eagles able to pull out a 1-0 victory on a goal in the 79th minute.
The Cougars (5-5-4) were outshot by only one, 14-13, and took five corners to three for Winthrop. The Eagles were able to snap the deadlock when Sean Green scored the game's only goal off an assist by Aiden Williams.
The goal snapped a 276:48 minute scoreless streak for the Charleston defense which included shutouts against NC State and Northeastern.
Olly Marshall went the distance for Charleston and made four saves, one more than Winthrop's Gareth Shaw. The Cougars had several opportunities to gain a draw with
Lucas Cedermark and
Iker Carew both firing a pair of shots in the final seven minutes.
Carew finished with a game-high seven shots and was joined by Cedermark and
Leonardo D'Ambrosio with shots on target.Â
The Cougars return to CAA play with a 1 p.m. game at Elon on Saturday.Â
