VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Head coach Jamie Futrell earned his 34th career victory, the tenth among active head coaches in the NCAA and 22nd all-time, as the Cougars secured first place at the Evie Odom Invitational in Virginia Beach.
After a whirlwind weekend due to Hurricane Ian, the Cougars finished the job in final round with a 2-under day for a team score of 278 and a final tournament score of 843. Minnesota didn't make it easy for the Cougars, going 17-under with 263 final round to take second place.
"It was a great team win. Everyone played a major role in the win this weekend," said Futrell. " Minnesota had an unbelievable final round, but we played steady golf all day and finished strong."
Emma Schimpf earned her second career medalist honors after a 5-under final round for a 9-under tournament. The sophomore posted six birdies on Sunday en route to a 65, her lowest round of the weekend.
"I am extremely happy for Emma. She is an amazing player and deserves the win."
Sophomore Mary Kathryn Talledo moved up nine places on day three to finish T-18. Talledo recorded back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 with 11 par for a 1-under day and 5-over tournament. Junior Othilie Lied also had an impressive final day, jumping eight places for a T-22 result. Lied had a 1-under final performance with six birdies for a 6-over tournament.
Junior Viktoria Hund finished T-22 with a 4-over day to go 6-over on the weekend. She was followed by rookie Adrian Anderson who rose two spots to take T-28 with a 7-over tournament and par day. Classmate Raegan Propes was T-37 at 7-over on Sunday and 9-over on the weekend while Smith Knaffle finished T-46 after a 1-over day and 10-over tournament.
The Cougars have slowly been climbing the Golfweek and Mizuno WGCA rankings after their opening second place performance at the Cougar Classic. CofC will hope to make a jump in both polls this week.
