MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Olivia Freitas scored just 28 seconds into the game, but College of Charleston couldn't find the back of the net again in a 1-1 draw with UNCW on Sunday at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.
The tie eliminates the Cougars from the CAA playoff race with Charleston needing a win and a William & Mary loss or tie against Hampton on Sunday. The Tribe defeated the Pirates, 4-0, to clinch the last of eight spots in the conference tournament.
The Cougars ended the season with a record of 8-7-3 and 2-4-3 in the CAA. The Seahawks, whose season also came to an end, are 7-7-3 and 3-4-2 in the league.
Freitas scored her fourth goal of the year and concluded her career with eight goals, nine assists and 25 points. It stayed a 1-0 game for just 10 minutes when Kayla Burroughs tied it up for the Seahawks.
Both teams had several scoring chances the rest of the way, with perhaps the best one coming off the foot of Delaney Dawes in the 77th minute when her rocket went just wide of the target. The Seahawks finished with a 15-10 advantage in shots.
Savannah Barron came up big in allowing the Cougars to maintain the tie, making eight saves including seven in the second half.
Head Coach Christian Michner on the 2022 season
"This season was incredible. I am heartbroken for the girls that it's over and felt like we deserved more. They put so much of themselves into this and gave every ounce they had for the program until the final whistle. It's such a fine line that separates teams in this league, and with this young group I know we'll be back and with the vital experience from this season. I have to thank this amazing senior class that led this group on and off the field as they've set a high bar for future leaders. We will settle in now for a period of development and work on building a team that can compete to win the championship next season!"
