CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston cross country teams are back on the course for the first time in three weeks on Friday when they compete at the Royals Challenge at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte.
The Cougars will be in the Gold Division of both races, with the women's 5K starting at 5:05 p.m. followed by the men's 8K at 5:45.
The women's field will consist of 30 teams and the men's have 28. The Cougars will be running against Division I programs Charlotte, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, South Carolina, UNCG, Wake Forest and Winthrop.
The Royals Challenge has been the site of many of the best times in Charleston history, especially on the women's side. Tess Masselink's time of 17:25 at the McAlpine Creek Park course in 2018 ranks second in the school record book, and four other runners in the top 10 set their marks there.
The Cougars last ran on September 16 after having their trip to Louisville canceled last week due to the affects of Hurricane Ian. At the Firetower Project in Boone, N.C., Sophia Brown entered the Charleston 5K record book with a ninth-place time of 18:00.63.
Five other Cougars finished in the top 40 in Boone, led by Hannah Wise in 20th place (18:30.44).
Jack Wedge and Jackson Reid have been the top two runners for Charleston so far this fall, with Wedge finishing 39th at the Firetower Project (27:12.31) and Reid taking 43rd (27:32.34).
