Jazmyn Stone Erupts for 27 Points in Loss at Gardner-Webb

Boiling Springs, N.C. – Freshmen Jazmyn Stone and Alexis Andrews established season scoring highs, but host Gardner-Webb used a 53-point second half to rally past College of Charleston, 91-87, at Paul Porter Arena on Wednesday afternoon.

Stone scored 27 points and Andrews added 18 to lead four Cougars (1-3) in double figures. Jaila Roberts stuffed the boxscore with 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Jada Logan tallied 12 points while adding eight boards.

Jhessikya Williams led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Alasia Smith tallied 21 to lead Gardner-Webb to its fourth straight win.

How It Happened
  • The Cougars jumped out to a 16-4 lead behind seven points by Roberts and led for most of the opening three quarters.
  • A layup by Roberts wrapped up the first stanza with Charleston in front, 24-19.
  • Gardner-Webb pulled within one early in the second quarter, but the Cougars maintained the lead on a jumper by Nicole Hemphill and 3-pointer by Andrews. 
  • Another 3 by Roberts with 1:30 left before halftime gave Charleston its biggest lead of the quarter at 44-36, and the Cougars were in front 44-38 at intermission.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs took their first lead at 62-60 on a layup by Williams with 3:07 left in the third quarter and were ahead 68-66 going to the fourth.
  • Stone reached the 20-point mark for the first time in her career with a 3 early in the fourth to give the Cougars a 69-68 lead.
  • Gardner-Webb responded with an 8-1 run before two baskets by Andrews cut the deficit to 78-74.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs rebuilt an 82-74 advantage, but Charleston did not go away without a fight.
  • A 3-pointer by Stone and steal and hoop by Andrews made it 87-84, and another long distance shot by Stone pulled the Cougars within 89-87 in the closing seconds.
Statistically Speaking
  • Stone scored her 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including four 3-pointers, and 5-of-7 from the line.
  • Andrews connected on 8-of-11 field goal attempts en route to scoring 18 points. She added season-best totals of seven rebounds and five assists.
  • Jaila Roberts had 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Jada Logan had 12 points to give the Cougars four players in double figures.
  • Two other Cougars – Adaora Onwumelu and freshman Nicole Hemphill – had a season-high eight points.
  • Charleston shot a season-best 50.8 percent from the field but was only 16-of-28 from the line. 
  • Gardner-Webb took 39 free throws and made 26 while shooting 48.4 percent from the field.
Game Notes
  • Stone exploded for 27 points after scoring only eight in her first three games. It was one shy of Logan's 28 against Tarleton for the most by a Cougar this season.
  • Andrews eclipsed her previous season best of 11 set against Meredith in the opener.
  • Roberts' seven assists were a career high as she fell one rebound and three assists of only the second triple-double in Cougar women's basketball history.
  • Logan has scored in double figures in all four contests and is averaging 20.0 points per game.
  • The game was the first meeting between the Cougars and Runnin' Bulldogs.
  • It was also the first of three for Charleston against Big South schools. The Cougars play at Radford in their next outing on November 30 and host Charleston Southern on December 4.
