CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston is back at TD Arena for the first time in three weeks when the Cougars host Coastal Carolina in the opener of a three-game homestand on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Cougars and Chanticleers have not met since Charleston won, 72-70, in Conway, S.C., on November 30, 2017. Coastal took the last contest at TD Arena by a score of 79-72 on December 20, 2016.
Friday is the 49th meeting in the series with Charleston holding a 35-13 lead including 21-12 during the Division I era. The only opponents the Cougars have played more frequently are Charleston Southern (68) and Francis Marion (50), and the 35 wins over Coastal are second only to the 56 against the Buccaneers.
The Cougars (2-3) snapped a three-game skid with a 79-60 win at Radford on Wednesday. Jazmyn Stone continued her scoring spree with 21 points while adding four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Jaila Roberts had her second career double-double and first as a Cougar with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Stone has scored 48 points the past two games, with her 27 against Gardner-Webb the most by a freshman since Janae Smith tallied 33 against Wofford in January 2011. Stone is one of only four freshmen since 2005-06 with multiple 20-point games and the only one to do so in consecutive games.
Adaora Onwumelu continued her strong play on the glass against Radford with 10 rebounds for the third time in five games. The Auburn transfer ranks eighth in the CAA with an average of 7.2 rpg while scoring a career-high eight points in each of the past two contests.
The Chanticleers are 2-4 with three losses against Power 5 opponents Georgia, Kentucky and Wake Forest. Aja Blount is just shy of averaging a double-double with 17.7 ppg and 9.2 rpg while shooting 58.2 percent from the field. Arin Freeman averages 10.0 ppg and paces Coastal with 26 assists and 16 steals.
