Cougars Rally Past Towson in CAA Opener

TOWSON, MD. – College of Charleston shot 50 percent in the second half, including 7-of-8 from long distance, in a come-from-behind 53-48 win over Towson in the CAA opener for both teams on Thursday at SECU Arena.

Alexis Andrews and Anika McGarity combined to score all 27 of their points in the second half. Andrews hit 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and led the Cougars (6-5, 1-0 CAA) with 14 points. McGarity added a trio of trifectas and finished with 13 points.

Jada Logan also reached double figures with 12 points and led Charleston with nine rebounds and three assists. Quinzia Fulmore paced the Tigers (6-6, 0-1) with 13 points while leading scorer Kylie Kornegay-Lucas was held to 10.

The Cougars return to TD Arena for the first time in nearly three weeks when they host CAA newcomer NC A&T on New Year's Day at 2 p.m.

How it Happened
  • The Cougars trailed by 14 at halftime but came out on fire in the third quarter.
  • Charleston was 9-of-17 from the field in the stanza and 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
  • The Cougars were still down 12 when they ripped off a 16-4 run to pull into a tie.
  • Andrews hit all four of her shots during the surge including consecutive 3s that tied it at 33.
  • McGarity starred in the fourth, starting with a 3-pointer that put Charleston in front 38-36.
  • She then added a basket and two free throws to make it 42-37 with 5:26 left.
  • Another 3 by McGarity and jumper by Logan had the Cougars in front, 48-46, with 53 seconds to go.
  • Charleston went 5-of-6 from the line over the final 14 seconds to put the game away. 
Game Notes
  • The Cougars won at Towson for the second time in 11 tries.
  • The 48 points were the fewest Charleston has allowed the Tigers to score in 21 meetings.
  • Andrews has reached doubled figures in two of the last three games.
  • She had made only seven 3-pointers prior to Thursday before making 4-of-5 vs. the Tigers.
  • The Cougars shot 46.7 percent from long distance (7-of-15), their second-best performance of the season.
