Cougars Drop Midweek Matinee to Bulldogs

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The Citadel bounced back from a pair of deficits and scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to edge College of Charleston, 8-6, in a back-and-forth affair on Tuesday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars struck first in the opening frame taking a 1-0 lead after Tyler Sorrentino led off the game with a triple and scored on an infield hit by Trotter Harlan.
  • Charleston would extend the advantage to 3-0 in the fifth on a two-run ground-rule double by Sam Cochrane.
  • The Citadel answered in the home half taking advantage of a defensive miscue and scoring three unearned runs to even the tally at 3-3.
  • The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game with two runs in the sixth to pull ahead, 5-3.
  • After Harlan drove in Joseph Mershon with a single in the seventh to cut the margin to 5-4, Cam Dean delivered a clutch two-out RBI triple in the eighth to score Patrick Sanchez and even the score at 5-5.
  • He would then score the go-ahead run on the next pitch when the Mershon put down a bunt and reached on the wide throw to first, giving Charleston a 6-5 advantage.
  • The Citadel answered once again in the home half, scoring two runs on a double by Ryan McCarthy to take the lead before another base hit extended the margin to 8-6.
KEY COUGARS
  • Harlan reached base four times with three singles and a walk while driving in two.
  • Cochrane continued his clutch hitting with his seventh and eighth RBI's in the last four games.
  • Mershon drew two walks and scored twice.
  • Zach Williams tossed four and one-third innings, allowing three unearned runs on four hits and establishing a new career-high with seven strikeouts.
FOR THE NOTEBOOK
  • Tuesday's setback snaps an 18-game winning streak for the Cougars against The Citadel.
  • The Cougars finished the game with multiple triples for the first time since collecting two against James Madison on April 17 of last season.

The Cougars will return home to host William & Mary in CAA play in a three-game series beginning on Friday. First pitch for Friday's series opener is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
