
Charleston Golf Leading the Field After Round 1 of CAA Championship

Three Cougars are in the Top 10 individually led by Nevill Ruiter

DATAW ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Charleston Men's Golf team is in the lead after 18 holes of action at the 2022 CAA Championship. The Cougars fired a 7-under 281 in Sunday's opening round and hold a two-stroke lead over second-place UNCW with 36 holes left to play. CofC surged in front on the 18th hole with birdies from Nevill Ruiter and Zach Reuland.
Ruiter, a freshman from The Netherlands competing in his first career CAA Championship event, leads The College, carding a 4-under 68 to sit T-2 individually. He is just one shot back of first with two rounds remaining. Ruiter racked up five birdies in Round 1, including three during a front-nine 33.
One stroke behind Ruiter was fellow CofC freshman phenom Kieron van Wyk. The South Africa native shot a 3-under 69 and is T-4 overall. Van Wyk carded just one bogey and sunk four birdies in an efficient opening round.
Defending CAA champion Zach Reuland gives CofC three Cougars in the Top 10 after 18 holes of action. He shot a 1-under 71 on Sunday, paced by 15 pars. Reuland was 2-under over his final 15 holes of play in Round 1, burying an emphatic birdie on the Par-5 18th to punctuate a solid day.
Senior Jack Parrott is T-16 individually after firing a 1-over 73 on Sunday. Parrott got off to a blistering start, birdieing three of his first four holes. He wound up with five birdies and 10 pars en route to the 73.
Rounding out CofC's results on Day One was Ty Sullivan, whose 5-over 77 put him at T-29.
The 2022 CAA Championship continues Monday with Round 2. The Cougars' tee times begin at 10:54 a.m. ET with the final pairing teeing off at 11:42 a.m. Freshman Tim Bertenbreiter will sub in for Sullivan and compete for CofC on Monday.
