Lemire's Pitching, Windham's Clutch Hit Powers Cougars to Split

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. –
Natalie Windham made her first career extra base hit pay off in a big way, driving in both runs in a 2-1 victory over Winthrop and a split of Tuesday's doubleheader at Patriots Point.

The Eagles won the first game, 3-0, behind the pitching of Reese Basinger, who struck out eight in a three-hit shutout. The team split both of their twinbills this season.

The nightcap was scoreless in the second when the Cougars put two on with two out. Windham then plugged the right center gap and legged out a triple, scoring Kayla Gutierrez and Aniz Roman to put the Cougars in front.

Payton Lemire made it stand up with her second standout performance of the season against Winthrop. She retired the first 11 batters she faced and finished with a three-hitter, allowing only an unearned run in the seventh. Lemire was also the winning pitcher in a 7-1 win over the Eagles on April 13 in Rock Hill.

Jenna Helberg returned to the Charleston lineup and went 2-for-3 with her team-leading 11th double of the season in the second game.

The Cougars conclude their 2022 home schedule this weekend with a three-game series with Towson that will go a long way in determining both teams' postseason aspirations. It will also be Senior Weekend with Charleston recognizing its five seniors over the course of both days.
