MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Leonardo D'Ambrosio had a goal and two assists to help keep College of Charleston undefeated in CAA play with a 3-1 win over Monmouth on Saturday at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (2-1-2, 2-0-1) are unbeaten in conference play for the first time since joining the CAA in 2013. Chris Elliott and Iker Carew also had goals, and Olly Marshall made six saves.
Elliott gave Charleston the lead in the 21st minute with his team-leading third goal of the season, with D'Ambrosio picking up his first assist of the day. D'Ambrosio and Elliott then teamed up to get the ball to Carew, whose first career goal made it 2-0 in the 36th minute.
The two assists give D'Ambrosio a team-high three on the year. He made it a three-goal margin just 50 seconds into the second half when he drew a penalty on the Monmouth keeper in the box and converted his second PK of the season.
"The boys played well today. I thought we had a very good first half and an okay second half," said head coach Keith Wiggans. "We need to try to put a full game together, but I'm happy with their effort and it's a win. Monmouth is a good team, and it's a very good result for us."
The Cougars held a narrow 14-13 advantage in shots and 8-7 in shots on target. The Hawks (2-3, 0-3) spoiled Marshall's attempt for his second clean sheet when Kristian Loenvig scored in the 63rd minute.
Charleston returns to action at USC Upstate on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The next CAA match is at Drexel next Saturday at 1 p.m.
