Both Cougar Teams Finish in Top 10 at Royals Challenge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Rhian Purves and Savannah Stoutt had top 11 finishes to lead the College of Charleston women's cross country team to third place at the Royals Challenge on Friday at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.
The Cougars had 104 points and bested Furman for third place in a tiebreaker. In addition to the Paladins, Charleston also placed ahead of teams from Charlotte and Wake Forest.
Purves took ninth place in the 5k race with a time of 18:05.80 to lead the Cougars for the fourth time in as many meets this season, and Stoutt was two spots behind with a season-best mark of 18:12.26. Maeve Gimbert also had her fastest time of the fall and took 27th in 18:33.25.
Rounding out the Charleston women's scorers were Sophia Brown (29th, 18:37.29) and Shannon Smith (37th, 18:50.68).
Freshman Mitchel Drees was once again the top finisher for the men, taking 51st place with a time of 25:55.23 on the 8k course. First-year runners went 1-4 for the Cougars with Roger Brown (26:45.43), Ben Ashmore (26:49.93) and Rob DiMedio (27:04.27) also scoring.
Tucker Green was the No. 5 Charleston finisher in 27:06.89.
The Cougars compete in their final regular season race next Saturday at the Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg. The CAA Championships are set for October 27 in Mechanicsville, Va.
