CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston track and field team will stay in the Carolinas for most of their meets while also venturing to some of the most prestigious events in the country, interim head coach Michael Tornifolio announced Thursday.
The Cougars will make four trips to Columbia during the indoor season beginning with the Gamecock Opener on January 13. The schedule also includes the Carolina Challenge (January 19-20), South Carolina Invite (February 2-3) and USC Invite (February 17).
The Cougars will also have jumpers and multi-event athletes competing in the VMI Winter Relays on February 2. The winter slate concludes with the CAA Indoor Championships on February 22-23 at the Nike Armory in New York.
The outdoor campaign begins with four destinations that have become regular stops. They compete in the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge on March 8-9 and return there the following weekend for the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational on March 16, preceded by the Buccaneer Invitational at CSU the previous day.
The Cougars make two more visits to Columbia in the spring for the Weems Baskin Relays (March 22-23) and USC Open (April 20). March 27-30 sees Charleston athletes competing at the Texas Relays, Florida Relays and Raleigh Relays, and the Duke Invitational takes place April 11-13.
The regular season concludes with the Aggie Invitational hosted by North Carolina A&T on May 3, a meet for athletes expected to compete at the CAA Championships, which takes place May 10-11 in Elon, N.C.
"We are very excited about this season," said Tornifolio. "When we were creating the schedule, we wanted to find a balance between opportunity and high level of competition and feel that we hit both goals.
"We have some familiar venues that have provided us great results, such as Weems Baskin and Duke, and it's great that we do not have to travel far to face some of the best competition. This allowed us to create a balance between all event groups to run fast, jump high and jump far."
