CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston sailing claimed a win at the Lake Norman Open on Saturday and placed second at Navy over the weekend.
Charleston cruised to a 35-point win over the field at Lake Norman posting 19 points across 16 races crossing the finish line in first place in 13 of those and going a perfect 8-for-8 in the B Division. The Cougars' rotation of Harrison Thomson and Brylie Schaubach as well as Elliot Raison and Paige Lubrano finished no lower than second in every race for the 35-point win.
Charleston's 35-point cushion on second place was wider than the margin between second and seventh place (North Carolina's 54 and Wake Forest's 85) in the field. The Cougars were also the only team to score below 50 and the lone team to post a 20 or lower in both divisions.
Meanwhile at the Naval Academy, the Cougars posted 119 points for a second-place finish behind only Cornell in the 18-team field. Charleston's rotation of Grace Squires, Kalea Woodard, Chloe Hudgins, Emma Tallman, Roxanne Snyder and Rowan Schanley posted 13 top-4 finishes across 22 races to claim the second place spot overall.
Six races across both divisions were completed on day one with Charleston sitting third with 65 points. Day two saw the Cougars jump one spot on the leader board posting 54 points over the final five races across both divisions collecting six of their 13 top-4 finishes to close the weekend strong.
At the St. Mary's Team Race, the Cougars placed eighth. The round of 16 couldn't be completed so the pre-seeded field was split into two groups of eight. The top four from each group would advance to a gold and bottom four compete in a silver round along with sail offs for trophy spots and ranking berths.
Charleston's rotation of Axel Stordahl, Brandon Geller, Noah Zittrer, Lucy Klempen, Noelle Owen, Aidan Iaconis, Anna Sherry and Garrett Grenauer competed in the gold round to finish eighth among the field.
