CHARLESTON, S.C. – Rhian Purves paced five College of Charleston women in the top 13, and freshman Mitchel Drees led the men in his first collegiate race at the Buccaneers Invitational on Friday at Charleston Southern.
Purves, the Cougars' top runner last fall, picked up where she left off a year ago by finishing third in the 4k race with a time of 15:41.3. She was joined in the top 10 by Sophia Brown (seventh, 15:55.2) and freshman Savannah Stoutt (10th, 16:11.6).
Also scoring for the women were newcomer Maeve Gimbert, a graduate transfer from La Salle, who had a time of 16:33.0 to finish 12th, one spot ahead of Cayden Crismon (16:35.6).
Drees made his collegiate debut a successful one, taking 14th place in a field of 73 athletes in the 6k race by crossing in 19:41.3. Also finishing in the top 20 were Jackson Reid (17th, 19:56.0), freshman Rob DiMedio (19th, 19:57.3) and Tucker Green (20th, 20:00.6).
A third freshman, Roger Brown, was the fifth Charleston scorer, covering the course in 20:04.3 for a 22nd-place standing.
Both teams were third with the women scoring 45 points to finish only six behind Coastal Carolina and five shy of the host Buccaneers.
"Overall we are pleased with our season opener," said assistant coach Chris Bailey. "The women were close to taking the win, but we need to tighten up our 1-5 spread. The men did a great job in packing up, but we will look to shift that pack closer to the front in upcoming races.
"Most importantly, this race is a good test of what we need to work on as we build towards our key competitions later in the season."
The Cougars are off next week before competing in the Adidas Challenge in Cary, N.C., on September 15.
