COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Cougars started off the 2024 indoor track slate strong at the Gamecock Invitational with many personal bests, heat wins and lots of movement in the all-time top 10 lists.
Kaitlynn Bailey highlighted the day by setting two school records in the 60 and 300 with times of 7.76 and 41.65, respectively. Her time in the 300 broke a record that had stood for 14 years. Emily Kreek ran a 42.26 in the 300 and is second behind Bailey in Cougar annals.
In the 60 hurdles Kreek tied fifth in school history with a 9.14, and Tonet Tallie ran to a 9.29 moving her up from eighth to seventh. Both athletes advanced to the semifinals against SEC competition.
Freshman Kinsley Allen started her collegiate career strong by tying for eighth in the books with a mark of 1.56 meters (5 feet, 1 1/4 inches) in the high jump.
From the distance squad, Rhian Purves ran a 4:59.59 mile to win the event and improving her hold on the third spot in the records. Right behind her was freshman Savannah Stoutt, who made her mark early in her college career by finishing second in the event while running a 5:00.30 to place herself fourth in Charleston indoor track and field history.
Cayden Crismon (10:13.72) and Sophia Brown (10:18.03) moved up to seventh and 10th, respectively, in the 3000. Crismon, Brown and Maeve Gimbert (10:19.37) finished second, third and fourth in the meet.
Moods were high all around, especially from interim head coach Michael Tornifolio who had this to say about the day. "Overall a great start to our indoor track and field season. With the first meet of the year, we look to see what our current fitness level is and how our fall training went. To open up with 11 new personal bests and two school records is phenomenal. We saw some good things today and are eager to get back to work on Monday to keep getting 1% better each day."
The Cougars will travel back to Columbia for the second meet of the season next weekend in the Carolina Challenge.
