CHARLESTON, S.C. - The 2024 Charleston baseball season gets underway tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. with Cougars playing host to the Marshall Thundering Herd in the first of a four-game series. The Herd are coming off of a 16-37 campaign that saw them finish at the bottom of the 2023 Sun Belt Conference standings with a 5-25 record against conference foes.
Charleston will be looking to build on a 36-22 (18-12) mark last season which ended in the CAA Tournament quarterfinals. The Cougars are predicted to finish fourth in the preseason CAA coaches poll behind Northeastern, UNC-Wilmington and CAA newcomers Campbell. Junior two-way player Cole Mathis was selected to the Preseason All-CAA team by the coaches with Luke Wood and Trotter Harlan among the honorable mentions.
Mathis also picked up a few other preseason accolades, being named a third-team All-American by D1baseball.com and the NCBWA. D1baseball also ranked Mathis sixth in its preseason list of the nation's best first baseman. Trotter Harlan was also named by the site among the top second baseman in the nation, coming in at #43.
Series History
This will be the fifth time the two programs meet with the Cougars holding a 4-0 record against the Herd. The last meeting was an 8-6 Cougars win in February of 2011.
Scouting the Herd
Marshall enters year two under head coach Greg Beals. The Herd return 21 players from last season's squad, led by Owen Ayers. Ayers had a stellar junior campaign which saw him set the single-season program record for doubles with 23. Senior Drew Harlow is the top returning hurler for the Herd. Harlow made 20 appearances out of the pen last season, ending with a 6-4 record, 5.56 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 45.1 innings.
