CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston baseball clinch a first series win of the season Sunday with a 2-1 win over Marshall. The Herd to a first inning lead but never crossed home plate from there as
Connor Campbell,
Alex Lyon and
Davis Aiken combined throw eight shutout innings. Campbell went six strong after giving up the early run, surrendering six hits with no walks and five strikeouts.Â
Marshall it started early with a lead-off double by Tre Hondras. Two productive outs from the Herd brought Hondras in with Owen Ayers picking up the RBI. Marshall starter Carter Lyles kept the Cougs off the board until the bottom of the third when
Kevin Madden drove in
Cole Mathis to tie the game. Griffin Miller came in for the Herd in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded. Miller struck out
Luke Wood to keep the game tied.Â
Marshall continued to pitch out of jams throughout the game. Charleston finally took a one-run lead in the sixth when
Cole Mathis was walked with the bases loaded. Marshall reliever Nick Weyrich got the Herd out of the inning with the score only at 2-1.Â
Charleston's
Alex Lyon came on in the seventh inning for Campbell and mowed through the Herd, getting six outs on just 16 pitches.
Davis Aiken came on in the ninth and worked around a Charleston error to get the save and clinch a series win over Marshall.Â
