CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston took on Marshall Monday afternoon in the final game of the opening four-game series. After falling behind early, Charleston established a 4-1 lead in the fourth. Marshall stormed back to tie the game at five in the top of the sixth inning. The Cougs responded with an RBI double from
Cole Mathis in the bottom of the sixth to re-take the lead. Charleston got insurance runs in the seventh and eighth before
Davis Aiken came on in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.Â
The Game was scoreless through three as both starting pitchers worked hard to get out of tight situations to keep the game at 0-0.
Andrew Duval ended up going four innings for Charleston, surrendering one run from three hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. Marshall starter Chad Heiner did not fair as well as Duval in the fourth. Heiner loaded the bases before walking
Hogan Garner to tie the game. Eddie Leon came on to pitch for the Herd and gave up an RBI single to
Tyler Sorrentino.
Dariyan Pendergrass and Avery Neves followed up with fielder's choices to push the lead to 4-1.Â
Down 5-2 in the sixth, Marshall stormed back with four hits and a walk to bring in three runs. Charleston responded in the bottom half with an RBI double from
Cole Mathis to re-take the lead. In the seventh,
Dylan Johnson came through with a pinch-hit double to extend the lead to 7-5. Charleston scratch across another run in the bottom of the eights through a Marshall error.
Davis Aiken came on in the ninth to try and pick up his second save after finishing off yesterday's ballgame. Aiken pitched a clean ninth to slam the door and move Charleston to 4-0.Â
