CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston baseball welcome the Nebraska Cornhuskers to Patriots Point this weekend for a four-game set starting Thursday at 2:00 p.m. The Cougs enter the contest at 7-0 on the season after a four-game sweep of Marshall and three-game sweep of Youngstown State. 7-0 is the best start the program has had under head coach Chad
Holbrook.
This will be the third series between the two programs, having met in a home-and-home during 2016 and 2017. In 2016, Charleston hosted the Huskers and took two from the series. The Cougars traveled to Lincoln in 2017 and were swept, bringing the program record to 2-4 against Nebraska.
Last Time Out
Charleston's excellent starting pitching from the opener continued last weekend against Youngstown. In game one, Jake Brink picked up his second victory with seven innings of one-run ball, striking out six in the Cougars 2-1 win. Aidan Hunter started on Saturday and kept the Penguins off the board for five innings. Youngstown would tie the game against the Cougar bullpen before the Cougs bats jumped out to big lead in a 14-5 win. In the final game of the series, Connor Campbell flirted with the first perfect game in program history before surrendering a two-out single in the eighth. Campbell's effort earned himself CAA Pitcher of the Week honors.
Kevin Madden kept his hot streak at the plate going against YSU, finishing 6-10 on the weekend with a pair of homers. The veteran third baseman raised his average to .519 through the first seven games. Trotter Harlan also enjoyed a good series at the plate, hitting a grand slam in game two after homering in game one. Avery Neaves also homered against the Penguins. Neaves and Madden both registered their 200th collegiate hit during the series.
Scouting the Huskers
Nebraska is off to a 4-3 start to the 2024 campaign. The Huskers opened the season with three games in the Shriners Children's College Showdown at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Nebraska defeated Baylor in the first game before dropping two tight contests against #21 Texas Tech and Oklahoma.
Last weekend, Nebraska traveled to Grand Canyon for a four-game set, taking three games against the Lopes. After taking the first two games, Nebraska led all the way in game three until a game-tying grand slam from the Lopes in the eighth propelled the hosts to victory. The Huskers bounced back in game three with a 10-8 win to take the series.
The hot bat for Nebraska heading into the series belongs to Josh Caron. Caron leads the team in homers (3) and RBI (11), hitting .333 through seven games. The Husker pitching staff has been solid so far with Friday's starter Brett Sears leading the way at 2-0 with a 0.79 ERA.
