CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston took on Liberty in a midweek contest at home Tuesday afternoon. Both teams were looking to bounce back after weekend sweeps. Liberty took an early lead with a run in the first before the Cougars jumped out in front with a four run second inning. Liberty got one back in the fifth before Charleston added four more in the eighth to cruise to a win.Â
Freshman
Hayden Thomas got the start for the Cougs after an impressive four innings against Nebraska. Thomas could not avoid traffic on the bases this time out but limited the damage to just one run.
Aidan Hunter relieved Thomas in the second with the bases loaded and one out. Hunter entered with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. That's when Charleston got the bats going as
Will Baumhofer delivered an RBI single to tie the game.
Dariyan Pendergrass followed followed that up with another RBI single.
Cole Mathis then extended the lead to three with a two-RBI single.Â
With the Cougs out in front, new pitcher
Andrew Duval came in and kept Liberty to just one run over three innings, Duval's efforts earned him the victory.
Alex Lyon came in for Duval in the seventh and kept Liberty off the board for three innings. In the bottom of the eighth Charleston picked up three insurance runs before Lyon came back out to finished off a three inning save.Â
