MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Daniel Brooks shined in his four innings on the mound, and the College of Charleston bats continued to blaze in a 10-2 victory over Charleston Southern on Tuesday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars (25-10) won for the fifth straight time and 11th in their past 12 games while also earning a season series win over the Buccaneers.Â
Brooks needed only 45 pitches to breeze through his outing, allowing only one hit while striking out six to pick up the win. He retired the first eight before allowing a two-out single in the fourth and fanned two batters in three of his four frames.
The offense supported Brooks with its seventh double-figure run performance in the past 12 games while blasting at least three home runs for the sixth time during that stretch.
Avery Neaves,
Cole Mathis and
Kevin Madden provided the long ball power with Mathis extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
Madden increased his hitting streak to eight, and
Trotter Harlan doubled to move his run to nine consecutive contests.Â
The Cougars scored twice in the second, and Neaves followed with the first of his two extra base hits in the third, a double that plated Harlan to make it 3-0. Two innings later Neaves hit a two-run shot as part of a three-run inning that upped the advantage to 6-0.
Madden and Mathis led off the sixth and seventh, respectively, with round trippers to put the game out of reach. The Charleston bullpen of
Andrew Duval and
Garrick Murray finished up, with Duval allowing one hit in 1.2 innings and Murray tossing two shutout frames with each striking out a pair.
The Cougars return to CAA play this weekend with an important home series against William & Mary. The Cougars are tied for second in the conference standings with Northeastern at 9-3, one game ahead of the Tribe, with UNCW (10-2) holding the top spot.
