Cougar Arms and Camel Bats Square Off in CAA Series

4/25/2024 11:41:00 AM

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The stingiest pitching staff in the CAA meets the conference's most explosive offense when College of Charleston visits Campbell for a three-game series in Buies Creek, N.C.

The teams play Friday at 6 p.m. followed by games on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The Cougars enter the weekend tied for the CAA lead with UNCW at 12-3 while the Camels are seventh at 7-8 (26-13 overall).

Charleston (29-10 overall) has won nine in a row - tied with California for the longest active streak in the nation - and 15 of its last 16 to move at least 19 games over .500 in April for the first time since the 2015 season. The Cougars have also won 11 of their past 12 CAA games including sweeps of Stony Brook, Monmouth and William & Mary.

The Cougars will look to continue a run of pitching success which has seen them climb to third in the nation with an ERA of 3.49. All three weekend starters (Jake Brink, 2.76), Aidan Hunter (2.91) and Connor Campbell (2.98) rank in the top six in the CAA and top 70 in the country. Davis Aiken gained his eighth save of the year against The Citadel and is in top 10 in that department.

Charleston's six shutouts are the second most nationally, and the team is third by allowing only 2.87 walks per nine innings.

The pitchers will face a tough test this weekend against a Camel team that has the fifth-most home runs in the country with 88 and averages more than nine runs a game. Campbell went deep five times, including three by Lawson Harrill, in an 18-4 win over Duke on Tuesday.

The Camels hold a 15-12 lead in the all-time series. The teams were together in the Trans America Athletic Conference from 1995-98 but have played only six times since, most recently a 3-2 Camel victory in Buies Creek in 2021.
