Cougars See Win Streak Snapped in Series Opener at Campbell

The defeat drops the Cougars (29-11, 12-4 CAA) one game behind UNCW in the conference standings after the Seahawks defeated William & Mary. Northeastern pulled to within one of Charleston with a victory over Elon.
The Cougars also lost for just the second time in their past 13 CAA contests while Campbell improved to 27-13 and 8-8 in the league. The teams play the middle game of the series Saturday at 3 p.m.
The evening started well for Charleston with an RBI double by Cole Singsank in the first and a run-scoring single by Cole Mathis in the third building a 2-0 lead. The Camels scored three in their half of the third, but the Cougars evened it in the fourth when a bunt by Dylan Johnson brought home Will Baumhofer.
From that point on the Campbell bats took over. The Camels put up four in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead and broke it open with four more in the eighth. Jake Brink took the loss for the Cougars, allowing six hits and seven runs in 4.1 innings.
Baumhofer had a single and double to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Mathis went 3-for-3 including his ninth home run of the season.
