Cougars Go "Mad" in Home Finale

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – In a season full of dramatic moments at Patriots Point, College of Charleston saved the best for last.

Kevin Madden, one of 11 seniors honored before the game, blasted a grand slam with one out in the bottom of the eighth to cap a six-run rally and give the Cougars a 6-3 victory over Northeastern to clinch a bye in the CAA Tournament.

Charleston (36-12, 18-5 CAA) won its seventh consecutive CAA series and remained a half game behind UNCW. With a four-game lead in the loss column over the Huskies, the Cougars can finish no worse than the No. 2 seed in the tournament which gets underway May 22 in Wilmington.

The Cougars trailed 3-0 and were held to only two hits through the first seven innings before coming to life with a vengeance in the eighth. With runners at first and second and one out, Cole Mathis and Cole Singsank produced consecutive RBI singles to make it a one-run game and bring in Husky closer Jack Beauchesne.

Trotter Harlan walked to load the bases, and Madden launched the first pitch he saw well beyond the left field fence to send the Patriots Point crowd into a frenzy. Davis Aiken gained his 11th save when Mathis squeezed a foul pop up to give the Cougars their 22nd win in the past 25 games and a 24-9 record at home.

Hayden Thomas worked a perfect eighth in relief of starter Connor Campbell to pick up the win. Campbell turned in a quality start in his final home game, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) with five strikeouts in seven innings.

The game was scoreless through four before Northeastern scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Cougars got back-to-back singles from Luke Wood and Dylan Johnson in the second and consecutive walks to start the third before seeing their bats silenced until the heroics in the eighth.

Charleston finishes the regular season with four games in North Carolina next week, taking on No. 9 Duke on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Elon in the final CAA series beginning Thursday.
