ELON, N.C. –Â
Avery Neaves became the first College of Charleston player to hit for the cycle in 17 years, and
Cole Mathis hit a pair of home runs to lead the Cougars to a rain-shortened 13-1 victory over Elon in the regular season finale.
Charleston (39-12, 21-5 CAA) earned its fifth series sweep of the season while winning 20 of its final 23 conference games. The CAA regular season champions will bring a run of 25 victories in their last 28 games overall into next week's conference tournament in Wilmington.
Neaves homered on the first pitch of the game, doubled in two runs in the fourth, tripled to lead off the sixth and completed the cycle when he singled later in the same inning. He is only the second Cougar to accomplish the feat, joining Ben Lasater against Wofford on April 1, 2007.
Mathis recorded his third two-home run game of the season and fifth of his career. He hit a solo shot in the third and added a two-run blast in the sixth to give him 14 on the season while joining
Cole Singsank for the team lead with 54 RBI.
Connor Campbell allowed two hits in three shutout innings and was credited with the win to match
Jake Brink with eight on the year.
Daniel Brooks worked the fourth and fifth frames with a pair of strikeouts.Â
Following the Cougars in the conference tournament seedings are No. 2 UNCW, which received the other first-round bye, Northeastern, Delaware, William & Mary and Hofstra. Charleston will begin play Thursday at 3 p.m. against an opponent to be determined on Wednesday.
