CHARLESTON, S.C. – David Land joins the College of Charleston athletic department as the new Director of Sports Performance.
Land will work primarily with the men's basketball program as the head of the sports performance department while helping all of the Cougar varsity programs compete at the national level.
He spent the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons at South Florida as director of men's basketball strength and conditioning.
"I am excited to announce David Land as the Director of Sports Performance. I take great pride in this area of our program as the health and growth of our student athletes is an essential part of their experience and our overall success. David comes highly recommended by several head coaches he's served in the past," said head men's basketball coach Chris Mack.
A veteran of the profession, Land served the Iowa State men's basketball team in the same role for the 2020-21 season. Land spent the two years prior to Iowa State serving as strength coach for Mike Young at Virginia Tech (2019-20) and Wofford (2018-19).
Prior to joining Young in Blacksburg, Land played a major role in Wofford's best season in program history. The Terriers had their first AP Top-25 ranking, a 20-game win streak, undefeated conference record (18-0) and the first NCAA Tournament win in school history.
A Raleigh, North Carolina native, Land was the Director of Olympic Strength and Conditioning at Utah State during the 2017-18 season. He oversaw sports performance for non-football sports, being tasked with staff, budgeting and scheduling for all of the Olympic sports.
Land, who was at Murray State from 2013-17, spent the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons working with the men's basketball program. In addition to men's hoops winning multiple conference titles, he also helped guide several other programs to Ohio Valley Championships, including women's tennis (2014, 2015) and women's golf (2015, 2017).
Land was significant in the development of point guard Cameron Payne, who was the 2015 OVC Player of the Year and led the Racers to a 29-6 record before becoming a lottery pick in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Racers were ranked during the 2014-15 season and had an NCAA-best 25 consecutive wins.
He has also worked at UNC Wilmington, East Tennessee State, Milligan College and NC State.
"He's proactive, innovative and tough. His desire to make our student athletes better isn't easy, it's hard work and David will get results with our team," added Mack. "In addition, David will be a resource for our players on and off the floor in every area of their lives. Again, I'm excited he's here with us."
