David, Gavalas Shine in Cougar Debuts at Dick Taylor Challenge

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Gabby David tied the College of Charleston all-time mark in the indoor long jump while freshman Jeorgi Gavalas led a group of six runners that rewrote the 1000m record book at the Dick Taylor Challenge on Saturday.

David, making her Cougar debut after transferring from Appalachian State, jumped 5.59m (18'4 1 ¼") to finish fifth and tie the school record first set by RoShani Glover in 2016. Gavalas posted a time of 2:58.96 to break Marissa Small-Towns' record that had stood since 2017. She won her heat and placed fifth overall.

Five other Cougars made their way into the top 10 in the 1000m, including Andie Harding (third, 3:05.45), Abby Mogg (sixth, 3:06.56), Katie O'Toole (seventh, 3:07.15), Lucy Alexander (eighth, 3:11.30) and Reagan Wells (ninth, 3:14.35).

Four other freshmen entered the record book in their first career meet with Caroline Himstreet's time of 4:56.24 in the mile converting to 4:53.34 to break Dena O'Brien's 12-year-old school record. Courtney Kearns is now third in the 500m (1:22.12), Caroline Cassidy is fourth in the 300m (43.38) and Charlotte Elliston is fifth in the pole vault (3.60m, 11'9 ¾").

Madison Jent remained third in the pole vault after clearing 3.75m (12'3 ½"), just .01 shy of her indoor best.

The Cougars are off next week before competing in the Gamecock Challenge in Columbia on Feb. 1.
