Cougars Head to Columbia for Gamecock Challenge

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston track and field team returns to action Saturday at the Gamecock Challenge in Columbia.
The field will includes athletes from Auburn, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest as well as CAA member NC A&T and in-state schools Charleston Southern, The Citadel, Furman, South Carolina State and Winthrop.
Almost the entire Cougar roster will be competing for the first time during the indoor season including a pair of freshmen who set school records two weeks ago at the Dick Taylor Carolina Challenge in Chapel Hill.
Caroline Himstreet ran a converted time of 4:53.34 in the mile to break a 13-year-old school mark. Jeorgi Gavalas became the first Charleston runner to post a sub-three minute 1000m when she ran a converted 2:57.03 to break a record that had stood for eight years.
Gabby David, a sophomore transfer who was also making her Cougar debut, tied the school record in the long jump by leaping 5.59m (18'1 ¼"). Joining David with a top mark in the field events was freshman pole vaulter Charlotte Elliston, who cleared the bar at 3.60m (11'9 ¾") to move into fifth place.
