BOONE, N.C. – The College of Charleston cross country teams will travel to compete at the Fire Tower Project on Friday, October 3 hosted by App State in Boone, N.C. The men will compete at 5:00 p.m. running an 8k and the women will follow at 5:40 p.m. running their first 6k of the season.
Other teams entered in the events are App State, The Citadel, Coastal Carolina, Erskine, Gardner-Webb, Lees-McRae, Lenoir-Rhyne, Milligan, Radford, SCAD Savannah, William & Mary and James Madison.
This will be Charleston's second time traveling to Boone this fall, the first time being in August for the Covered Bridge Invitational. The men were fourth of five teams, and the women were fourth of six teams.
Most recently, The College's cross country teams competed in-state at the Chanticleer Challenge hosted by Coastal Carolina on September 19.
On the women's side, the team scored 69 points and defeated CAA foe, UNCW.
Cara Grace Phillips crossed the line first for the women with a time of 18:04.59 placing tenth while scoring ten points for the Cougars. In Conway,
Lucy Alexander and
Gail Vaikutis competed in their first ever collegiate races. Alexander placed 21st and Vaikutis placed 27th. The women finished third of eight teams.
On the men's side,
Declan Byrne set a new school record in the 8k with a time of 24:33.75, helping the men to a third place finish out of nine schools at the Chanticleer Challenge.

Charleston has competed in the Fire Tower Project races three times before. The men have placed seventh in 2021, 2022, and 2024. The women placed third in 2022 and 2021 while placing fifth in 2024.
