EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. – The College of Charleson women's golf team secured the program's third straight Edisto Island Invitational title on Tuesday afternoon at the Plantation Course. The Cougars battled through three days of rainy conditions to secure the victory.
Charleston defeated second-place Elon by nine strokes and turned in the tournament's only under par team round on Tuesday with a collective 1-under performance.
It is the second team win for the Cougars this season after winning the Tot Hill Farm Invitational in late September. It also marks head coach Jamie Futrell's 43rd career coaching victory.
"It was great win for the team. Elon made a big run at us late today and we responded like a championship team," said Futrell.
Molly Hardwick won her first collegiate title, shooting a career-low round of 66 during Tuesday's final round. She was the only competitor to turn in an under par individual tournament at 6-under, winning by eight strokes. The senior led the field in total birdies with 11, six of which came in the final round.
"Molly was in another league this week. Winning individually by eight shots was an amazing performance," said Futrell.
Carys Fennessy and Emilie von Finckenstein joined Hardwick in the top ten in the individual standings. Fennessy finished in fourth place (+4), the top finish of her young collegiate career. von Finckenstein finished in tenth place (+9). The junior was second to Hardwick in total birdies with ten through three rounds. Both Fennessy and von Finckenstein sank three birdies on Tuesday.
Adrian Anderson finished in 19th, leading the field in total pars (39).
The win concludes Charleston's fall slate. The team returns to action on February 15 at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational in Sarasota, Florida hosted by Michigan State.
