CHARLESTON, S.C. – Only certain players earn the honor of having their jersey hung in the rafters after their playing careers are over. When it comes to College of Charleston women's basketball, only five players have had their jerseys raised in the rafters.
One more will be added on January 25 when Breanna Bolden will see her jersey ascend into the rafters of TD Arena. Bolden donned the maroon and gold from 2013-2017 and is Charleston's all-time scoring leader in the Division I era with 1,672 points.
"Getting my jersey retired is a dream come true," said Bolden. "From my first days as a freshman, I always had my eyes on the rafters and wanted my jersey to be up there one day. To see it actually happen is a true full circle moment and I'm extremely blessed to be a part of such an incredible program."
The Edgewater, Md., native helped Charleston earn 44 wins during her time with the squad. She started 111 games, played in 124 total contests and logged 3,799 minutes as a Cougar.
In addition to being CofC's DI scoring leader, Bolden currently holds seven other records that include the following: career field goals made (634), career field goal attempts (1,606), career steals (333), career steals average in the DI era (2.7), single season steals (98, 2016-17), single season steals average (3.3, 2016-17) and single season field goals made in the DI era (201, 2016-17).
"Being a Cougar meant a lot to me. Looking back on my time at Charleston, I'm grateful for the opportunity the coaches gave me and for their belief in me. It shaped me into the person I am today and gave me a strong work ethic. Being a Cougar taught me how to be adaptable and how to be a leader."
Not only did Bolden lead the Cougars in scoring from 2015-2017, but she also anchored their defense, earning the Coastal Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year award those same three years. Additionally, Bolden earned the following accolades: 3x CAA All-Defensive Team, 2x CAA Preseason All-CAA First Team, 2017 All-CAA First Team, 2016 All-CAA Second Team, 2015 All-CAA Third Team, 3x CAA Player of the Week and 1x CAA Rookie of the Week.
Bolden is set to make the trip out to Charleston when the Cougars takes on the North Carolina A&T Aggies on January 25. That afternoon, she will become one of just six Cougar women's basketball players to have their jerseys in the rafters of TD Arena.
"I'm proud of this year's team. I love their fast pace and style of play. I'm excited to come out in January and see them compete!"
As a part of the Charleston women's basketball varsity program's 50th anniversary celebration, more feature stories on past Cougar greats and influential players will be shared on the College of Charleston official athletics website at cofcsports.com.
