
Cougars Cruise Past Aggies

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (6-0) cruised to a 72-42 victory over the New Mexico State Aggies (1-4) at the Big Easy Classic Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the 2025-26 Charleston women's basketball squad is now 6-0 and off to the best start in program history in the Division I era.
The 6-0 mark surpasses the 5-0 start from last years team. The best start in all of CofC women's basketball history came back in the 1979-80 season when that squad began the year with 12 consecutive wins.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After falling behind 2-0, Charleston went on a quick 8-1 burst to take an early 8-3 advantage.
- The teams went back-and-forth for the next few minutes before CofC closed the quarter on an 8-0 run with four points each from Taryn Barbot and Grace Ezebilo to take a 22-9 lead into the second quarter.
- Highlighted by 10 points from Taryn Barbot, CofC outscored New Mexico State 19-9 in the second to take a 41-18 advantage into the locker room.
- Five different Cougars scored in the third, with Sophia Tougas contributing five points as Charleston won the quarter 14-12.
- A quick 5-0 run thanks to a three from Anilys Rolon and a jumper by Tyja Beans gave the Cougars a 60-30 edge with 8:35 left in the contest.
- The Aggies rattled off seven-straight points, but CofC scored 12 of the game's last 17 points to win the contest by a final of 72-42.
- Junior Taryn Barbot posted 18 points, four rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
- Junior Taylor Barbot tallied 12 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals.
- Junior Tyja Beans scored 14 points and grabbed four boards and two steals.
- Junior Grace Ezebilo collected 11 boards to go along with four points and four steals.
- Redshirt senior Sophia Tougas totaled seven points and five rebounds.
- Charleston shot 41.2% from the field and held New Mexico State to a 28.6% clip.
- The Cougars forced 28 Aggie turnovers, collected 16 steals and scored 34 points off turnovers.
- CofC outscored New Mexico State 32-22 in the paint.
- Charleston scored 23 second chance points.
- The Cougars won every quarter against the Aggies.
- Freshman guard Aubrey Stevenson made her collegiate debut.
- Junior forward Grace Ezebilo collected her 800th career rebound and recorded double-digit rebounds for the 6th straight game.

- Charleston will have a day off before facing High Point Saturday afternoon at the Alario Center for the Cougars' last game at the Big Easy Classic. - The Panthers have earned wins over Wofford, East Carolina, Vermont, Merrimack and Johnson C. Smith. High Point is led by graduate guard Aaliyah Collins who made the All-CUSA Preseason Second Team and is averaging 19.3 points, 3.8 assists and 3.2 steals per game. Junior guard Macy Spencer is averaging 16.5 points per game. Additionally, senior forward Nevaeh Zavala was named the CUSA Preseason Player of the Year and made the All-CUSA Preseason First Team. Zavala is averaging 7.7 points and 3.5 boards per game.
