MT PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston baseball beat App State in the series opener, 5-4, Friday afternoon at Patriots Point.
Sophomore
Brent Gibbs went 4-for-4 in the win as the Cougars improve to 8-4. The Mountaineers slip to 6-7 with the loss.
Junior
Jake Brink struck out a career-high seven batters across 6.0 innings in the no-decision. Redshirt junior
Alex Lyon tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth before senior
Davis Aiken fanned a pair in a 1-2-3 ninth for earn his second save of the year.
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST APP STATE:
- Graduate Avery Neaves hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the first and finished the game with four RBI.
- Up 2-1 in the third, the Cougars tacked on a pair with RBI singles from Neaves and redshirt junior Ethan Plyler.
- Level at four in the seventh, Neaves drove in his fourth run of the day on a groundout, giving Charleston once again.
- CofC's bullpen shut down the Mountaineers, with Lyon and Aiken allowing just three base runners over the final three frames.
- Senior Dariyan Pendergrass finished the game a home run shy of the cycle and collected his first triple in a Charleston uniform.
OF NOTE:
- Charleston improves to 36-13 all-time against App State and 21-7 at home.
- Aiken picked up his 13th career save with Charleston and now sits eighth all-time in school history.
- Gibbs tallied a career-best four hits in the win, all of which didn't leave the infield.
- Brink fanned a collegiate-high seven batters.
- Pendergrass extended his on base streak to 12 games to start the year.
- The senior has also tied his stolen base total from 2024 (10 in 28 games).
- Four of Charleston's nine home runs have come in the first inning.
- CofC improves to 147-42 when scoring first under head coach Chad Holbrook.
