GREENSBORO, N.C. – College of Charleston continued its red-hot surge by completing a sweep of North Carolina A&T with an 11-6 victory on Saturday.
The Cougars (30-23, 20-7 CAA) earned their fifth conference sweep of the season and clinched the No. 3 seed in next week's CAA Tournament in Buies Creek, N.C. Charleston also extended its winning streak to seven, the team's longest since 2014.
The Cougars will open postseason play against No. 6 Hofstra on May 7 at 2:30. This is the highest Charleston has been seeded since 2017.
After starting the season 5-14, the Cougars have run off 25 wins in 34 games since March 7 to earn their first 30-win campaign since 2018. The seven conference series victories tied the school record while the 20 conference wins established a new standard.
Halle Cannon led the way at the plate with a pair of two-run homers, and
Jay Wrightsman and
Austy Miller also had notable afternoons. Wrightsman stole two bases to give her a school season record 29 and Miller ran her hitting streak to 15, the longest by a Cougar in the CAA era.
Game Summary
- The Cougars had a 12-hit attack with Cannon adding a single to her two long balls and scoring four runs.
- Wrightsman and Karlee Hughes both had two hits and scored three times, and Leela Langston had two singles and a pair of RBI.
- Kendall Thackston went the first five innings and struck out a career-high eight, giving her 14 strikeouts in her last two starts.
- Campbell Schaen pitched two innings of one-hit shutout ball to earn her first career save.
- Charleston scored in all but one inning with four frames with at least two runs.
CAA Tournament
- Delaware (23-4) and Elon (21-6) earned the two byes followed by Charleston (20-7), Campbell (19-8), Stony Brook (18-9) and Hofstra (15-12).
- Prior to the Charleston-Hofstra game on Wednesday, Campbell will take on Stony Brook.
- The losers of the two first round games play again on the opening day at 5:00.
- The Charleston-Hofstra winner plays Elon on Thursday at 2:30 while the Campbell-Stony Brook winner takes on Delaware at noon.
