WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team fell to UNCW 3-2 in Wilmington Sunday, September 28.
The Cougar's record is now 6-4-1 and 2-1 in conference play. UNCW is the only remaining undefeated team in conference play.
The Seahawks controlled the first half finding the first goal of the afternoon in the 16th minute. UNCW took the only corner of the half 19 minutes in. With nine minutes left to play, the Seahawks scored two back-to-backgoals to enter the locker room up 3-0.
Charleston came out of the locker room reset, ruling the second half taking six shots compared to UNCW's three. Ten minutes into the second half, the Cougars were on the attack when Maggie Heffernan found herself in scoring range. Her shot was blocked by a defender, but Avery Nassetta was able to save the rebound and earn a second chance, scoring Charleston's first goal of the afternoon.
Ainsley Chunn held the Seahawks scoreless in the second half saving two shots.
With less than a minute left, Charleston found themselves on the offense and Faith Slimmer sunk the final goal of the day as time expired, but it was not enough to complete the comeback, making the final score 3-2 Seahawks.
Charleston returns home Thursday, October 2 to host Hampton with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. Thursday's game will open CAA play at Patriots Point and will also be streamed through FloCollege with the link to watch here. The match will feature a Kick the Stigma theme to support and raise awareness for mental health.
