
Cougars Stifle Seahawks; Win Eighth-Straight Game

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (15-3, 7-0) defeated UNCW (5-13, 1-6) 71-37 at Trask Coliseum Friday night.
After falling behind 13-6, the Cougars stifled the Seahawks, scoring 25-straight points over a span of more than 16 minutes to take control of the game. With the win, the Cougars improved to 7-0 in conference play for the first time ever.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Taryn Barbot drilled a triple on the first possession of the game, the Seahawks hit three-straight triples and made their first five shots to take a 13-6 advantage with 6:14 left in the first period.
- Over the last six minutes of the quarter, the Cougars forced eight Seahawks turnovers and scored the last 15 points of the stanza to take a 21-13 edge in the second period.
- With Charleston's defense continuing to give UNCW trouble, the Cougars held the Seahawks scoreless for over 16 minutes, and outscored them 10-2 in the second quarter as they took a 31-15 lead into the break.
- Triples from Sophia Tougas and Taryn Barbot helped extend Charleston's lead to 21 points (41-20) by the third quarter media timeout.
- Coming off the bench, Jami Hill drilled three triples to close out the third quarter as CofC took a 55-24 lead into the final 10 minutes.
- Two more Jami Hill triples extended the Cougars' advantage to 37 (61-24) and forced a Seahawks timeout with 7:40 left in the game.
- Taylor Barbot, Leah Philpotts and Jami Hill all scored for the Cougars over the last seven minutes as CofC went on to win the contest 71-37.
LEADING COUGARS
- Junior Taylor Barbot had five points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals. She also collected her 100th career steal Friday night.
- Junior Taryn Barbot stuffed the stat sheet as she totaled 12 points, nine boards and a career-high nine assists. She also collected four steals against the Seahawks.
- Junior Tyja Beans scored 10 points and scored in double digits for the eighth-consecutive game.
- Junior Jami Hill tied her career-high with six made threes as she totaled a game-high 20 points and went 6-for-7 from beyond the arc.
- Redshirt senior Sophia Tougas tallied 10 points and put up double figures for the sixth time this year.
KEY STATS
- Charleston shot 44.1% from the field and 42.3% from beyond the arc, while holding UNCW to a 31.6% clip.
- CofC forced 27 UNCW turnovers, collected 13 steals and scored 29 points of Seahawk errors.
- The Cougars won every quarter against the Seahawks.
- Charleston outrebounded UNCW 36-24.
- CofC scored 18 fast break points and did not allow any points in transition.
- The Cougars got 28 points from their bench.
- Charleston outscored UNCW 24-12 in the paint.
OF NOTE
- Taryn Barbot scored her 1,401st point as a Cougar and is 12th on Charleston's all-time scoring list.
- The two points allowed in the second quarter are the least points the Cougars have ever allowed to a D1 opponent in a quarter. It's also tied for the second-least points allowed in a quarter in program history.
- The 37 points given up is tied for the 11th-fewest points allowed in a game in program history. It's also the fewest points the Cougars have allowed this season.
- Four different Cougars scored in double figures, while eight different Cougars scored in the contest.
- CofC is now 21-20 all-time against UNCW, and the Cougars have won five-straight against the Seahawks.
- The Cougars have now won eight-straight contests.
- Taylor Barbot collected her 100th career steal Friday night.
