“Brian Kloman should be the prototype assistant coach moving forward in our profession. He is an elite relationship builder. He uses this special gift to be a great recruiter, but more importantly, he uses it to build special bonds with our current players. The key to retention is the investment of time into players. You have to love them. He is the best I’ve ever seen at this. He has become an elite defensive coach and runs our defense as the coordinator.” – College of Charleston Head Coach Pat Kelsey
Brian Kloman is in his third season as an Assistant Coach at College of Charleston after helping guide CofC to a 31-4 season with an appearance in the NCAA First Round in 2023.
He served a key role in the success of the Winthrop men’s basketball program the previous seven seasons under Head Coach Pat Kelsey, and now, joins him to do the same in the Lowcountry.
During Kloman’s time on the staff, the Eagles compiled a 152-65 (.700) winning record, made four Big South Conference championship game appearances and earned three NCAA Tournament berths in 2017, 2020 and 2021. Winthrop also won 26 games in 2016-17, which tied for the third-most wins in program history.
“Brian Kloman is a rare breed of coach nowadays,” said Jeff Goodman, College Basketball Insider for Stadium. “He is someone who is the ultimate grinder and will turn over every stone in order to recruit a player. He has tremendous relationships throughout the country – and is a quality addition to Pat Kelsey’s staff – which is as good of a mid-major staff as there may be in the country.”
Prior to Winthrop, Kloman worked as an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech and North Carolina Central. At NCCU, he was a major part of building the program, which went 28-6 overall and to the NCAA Tournament in 2014.
His coaching career includes stints at Pikeville College, Daniel Webster and Pfeiffer College. In 2008, Kloman founded RecruitingRumors.com, which became one of the most popular sources for recruiting information amongst college coaches.
A native of Asheville, N.C., Kloman is a 2002 graduate of the University of Tennessee. His father, Chris Ferguson, has been in college coaching for more than 30 years and was most recently with the Charlotte Hornets under former Head Coach Mark Price.
