With the win the Cougars improve to 1-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play. The Bulldogs fell to 0-4-0 and 0-1-0.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead at the 22:47 mark of the first half when Jeff Files scored from about six yards out on assists from Sean Warren and Steffen Schollaert.
Charleston, which held a 10-9 edge in shots on goal, stretched its lead to 2-0 with 5:50 left in the first half when Marc Gaskins took a pass from Drew Cavanaugh near midfield, broke free behind The Citadel defense, and beat goalie Joshua Clayman from about 14 yards out.
Charleston's two second half scores came within two minutes of each other. Ben Hollingsworth scored at the 79:33 mark for a 3-0 lead, while freshman Tony Myers scored his first collegiate goal at the 81:07 mark for the final margin.
The Cougars are in action again on Tuesday, September 25th when the play host to nationally ranked Furman in a 6:00 start at Patriots Point. The Citadel is at Furman on Saturday at 2:00pm.
