This is the first game back for the Furman soccer team since a tragic accident last week. Gray Griffin, a freshman defender on the Paladins' soccer team, was killed in an automobile accident on October 11th. Furman was also without three other members of the team, who were also injured in the accident, including Josh Villalobos, Sean Murray, and Chefik Simo.
The game was close throughout, but with less than five minutes remaining, at the 85:25 mark in the second half, the Furman Paladins scored the game's only goal. Anthony Esquivel's header on a rebound save by Charleston's Keith Wiggans sailed into the back of the net. Clint Dempsey was credited with the assist.
For the game, Furman took thirteen shots while Charleston took eight. Furman led in corner kicks 3-2. Charleston goalie Keith Wiggans and Furman goalie Alex Maslow played the entire 90 minutes. Wiggans finished with six saves while Maslow finished with four saves.
Charleston's record now stands at 6-5-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the Southern Conference. Furman improves to 11-2-1 overall and 6-0-0 in the Southern Conference.
The Cougars are in action again next week. They take on the South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday, October 23rd, 6:00 pm at Patriots Point Field in Mount Pleasant, S.C. Furman is in action again on Monday, October 21, 7:00 pm when they host Lipsomb in Greenville, S.C.
