Lesesne's goal with 31:31 left in the match propelled the College of Charleston to a 1-0 win over 9th-ranked South Carolina in men's college soccer action before 1,071 at Patriots Point Field on Wednesday.
With the win, Charleston's first over USC since a 6-2 victory in 1996, the Cougars improved to 7-5-1. The Gamecocks fell to 9-4-1.
Lesesne scored when he got a cross from Ricardo Diaz Granados and beat USC goalie Michael Bachmeyer from about eight yards out.
"All I had to do was touch it and put it in the goal," said Lesesne, a Columbia, S.C. native. "I saw him (Bachmeyer) come out to cut down my angle and I thought this was my chance."
Bachmeyer, who entered the match with five shutouts and ranked 8th nationally with a 0.67 goals against average, recorded three saves. Charleston goalie Keith Wiggans finished with five saves. The Gamecocks held a 12-7 advantage in shots.
"It's a great win for these kids who have worked so hard," said Lundy. "We've had some tough losses against some good teams and this is a great reward for these boys."
"We're not a good enough team to spot someone 45 minutes of a game and come back and win," said USC coach Mark Berson. "We're still a young team and they don't understand the responsibility when you step out there. It's a process and it cost us a little tonight."
Charleston played the match without two of its top players. Tony Myers, who leads the Cougars with five goals and 11 points, is out with a broken jaw. Jeff Files missed the game after picking up his fifth yellow card in Charleston's last match at Furman. Files has two goals and a team-leading three assists.
The Cougars play at Southern Conference member VMI on Saturday at 11:00 am. The Gamecocks play host to 14th-ranked Furman at 2:00 on Sunday.
