Junior Jeff Files scored his fourth goal of the season at the 1:38 mark of the game to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Files took a cross from Sophomore Troy Lesesne and headed it into the back of the goal.
Winthrop, trailing 1-0 at halftime, would tie the score at 1-1 at the 59:04 mark of the game on a penalty kick by Francis Wakhisi.
The Cougars would answer a little over three minutes later on a goal by Sage Martina. His shot went through the middle of the goal after an assist from Ben Hollingsworth. The goal was Martina's second of the year, and Hollingsworth picked up his fifth assist of the year.
Charleston led the game in shots, 13-9. Winthrop led in corner kicks, 7-5.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 10-5-1 overall and remain 4-2-0 in Southern Conference action. Winthrop falls to 11-4-1 overall.
In the first game of the night, Coastal Carolina defeated South Carolina 3-0.
The two teams battled to a scoreless first half tie, but Coastal Carolina would score three goals in the second half to win the game.
Mubarike Chisoni gave the Chanticleers a 1-0 lead at the 67:28 mark of the game when he turned in the box and watched his shot hit the back right corner of the net.
Joseph Ngwenya scored the last two goals for the Chanticleers. At the 82:49 mark, his breakaway goal on an assist from Thomas Rutter was his 22nd goal of the year. He picked up his 23rd goal about six minutes later on another breakaway goal which also hit the back right corner of the net.
With the win, The Chanticleers won for the 15th straight time in as many games to improve to 15-0-1 overall. The Gamecocks fall to 9-6-1 overall.
All four teams return to action again on Sunday in the second day of the tournament at Patriots Point Field. South Carolina takes on Winthrop at 1:00 pm followed by the College of Charleston taking on Coastal Carolina at 3:30 pm.
